Dynamic load balancing in parallel queueing systems: Stability and optimal control
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider a system of parallel queues with dedicated arrival streams. At each decision epoch a decisionmaker can move customers from one queue to another. The cost for moving customers consists of a fixed cost and a linear, variable cost dependent on the number of customers moved. There are also linear holding costs that may depend on the queue in which customers are stored. Under very mild assumptions, we develop stability (and instability) conditions for this system via a fluid model. Under the assumption of stability, we consider minimizing the long-run average cost. In the case of two-servers the optimal control policy is shown to prefer to store customers in the lowest cost queue. When the inter-arrival and service times are assumed to be exponential, we use a Markov decision process formulation to show that for a fixed number of customers in the system, there exists a level S such that whenever customers are moved from the high cost queue to the low cost queue, the number of customers moved brings the number of customers in the low cost queue to S. These results lead to the development of a heuristic for the model with more than two servers. Load Balancing in Parallel Queueing Systems – D.G. Down and M.E. Lewis 1

The Achievable Region Approach to the Optimal Control of Stochastic Systems
The achievable region approach seeks solutions to stochastic optimisation problems by: (i) characterising the space of all possible performances (the achievable region) of the system of interest, and (ii) optimising the overall system-wide performance objective over this space. This is radically di erent from conventional formulations based on dynamic programming. The approach is explained with...
متن کاملLoad Balancing Approaches for Web Servers: A Survey of Recent Trends
Numerous works has been done for load balancing of web servers in grid environment. Reason behinds popularity of grid environment is to allow accessing distributed resources which are located at remote locations. For effective utilization, load must be balanced among all resources. Importance of load balancing is discussed by distinguishing the system between without load balancing and with loa...

In this paper, a combination of simulated annealing (SA) and intelligent water drops (IWD) algorithm is used to solve the nonlinear/complex problem of simultaneous reconfiguration with optimal allocation (size and location) of wind turbine (WT) as a distributed generation (DG) and dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) as a distributed flexible AC transmission systems (DFACT) unit in a distribution sys...
متن کاملAnalysis of Dynamic Load Balancing Strategies Using a Combination of Stochastic Petri Nets and Queueing Networks
This paper is concerned with the analytical evaluation of two well known dynamic load balancing strategies, namely, shortest queue routing (SQR) and shortest expected delay routing (SEDR). We overcome the limitations of existing analysis methodologies, using a well known hybrid performance model that combines generalized stochastic Petri nets and product form queueing networks. Our methodology ...

The main objective of this paper is to model and optimize the parallel and relatively complex FuzzyP+FuzzyI+FuzzyD (FP+FI+FD) controller for simultaneous control of the voltage and frequency of a micro-grid in the islanded mode. The FP+FI+FD controller has three parallel branches, each of which has a specific task. Finally, as its name suggests, the final output of the controller is derived fro...
